Wealthy upper East Side Manhattanite, Maxine “Mad Max” Davies has made the decision to help her son-in-law Whip raise the two grandchildren. He owns a construction company and spends most of his time on sites around the world. Max secures a promise to work in the States rather than take international jobs. Her solution to housing is to lease high-end RVs for the family.
Max finds herself preparing to live in post-Katrina Mississippi, where the land and people have been both been battered. In a vain attempt to have a normal life, she confronts bigotry and outright racism. a gang of escaped prisoners bent on murder, a woman and child kept as virtual slaves and child abuse.

Of course, trouble finds her – finds all of them – and she handles it with her usual grit and aplomb. I enjoyed the new characters here, namely the English tutor Max hired to homeschool the children and the two pastors from different sides of the track.
